Unlike AP, IB, or Cambridge AICE options (which all offer preparatory instruction intended for high school students), dual enrollment means you enroll in full college classes while still attending high school. Students complete college-level assignments and receive credit that applies to both their high school diplomas and subsequent college degrees.
Make your dual enrollment class choices meaningful - take classes that will count toward your General Ed credits and your high school.
Available dual enrollment college options for Palm Beach County public school students are:
Students can enroll in up to 8 credit hours (or two courses) per semester. However, to avoid overwhelming your current workload, it is recommended to start with just one course per semester.
Grades received for dual enrollment classes count as your college GPA. Your Palm Beach County high school will weigh them on a 6.0 scale (similar to AP/AICE/IB).
Students have the option to take summer classes, which can be a great way to complete a course and explore whether dual enrollment is right for you in the fall. Due to the condensed schedule, it's recommended to take only one class during the summer. Avoid science courses with a lab, as they can be especially demanding in a shorter term.
NOTE: FAU allows only 1 class to be taken over the summer
NOTE: PBSC allows 2 classes to be taken over the summer
Students interested in dual enrollment should consult their dean, dual enrollment coordinator, school counselor, OR College Map Mentor to learn about their options and determine which courses to pursue.
NOTE: Dual enrollment needs to be taken seriously. The grades earned during dual enrollment ARE your first college grades.
NOTE: Withdrawals (W) or a grade earned of a D or an F are grounds for dismissal from the Dual Enrollment program.
Before selecting your classes, review the Florida Department of Education Dual Enrollment Equivalency List to understand how many high school credits you’ll earn and how the course will be recognized by colleges.
Per the FL Department of Education:
"A school district may not deny a student access to dual enrollment if the student meets the initial eligibility criteria as stated in the appropriate articulation agreement."
This also means you may take a dual enrollment class if the high school teaches a comparable AP/AICE/IB class on its campus.
Dual Enrollment Regular - students who want to take one or two college classes per term
Dual Enrollment Early Admission - students take a minimum of four classes per term (full-time). They are associated with their high school, and may participate in all clubs/teams/events, but do not take classes on the high school campus.
May start in the Fall or the Spring.
